Gears of War 4 takes the look and feel of the previous entries in the popular shooter franchise and updates them for a new generation, keeping the core of both story and gameplay but making a few simple changes to add depth and complexity. The main character of this game is JD Fenix, son of the original game's protagonist Marcus and all around a friendlier, more cheerful character. Marcus is still around, though, to keep the grumbling total high.
Chaotic battle action
Gameplay in Gears of War 4 will feel familiar to anyone who's played the original Gears of War, its sequels, or any of the many cover-based shooters that drew on the series' influence. New mechanics include more destructible cover, including pods that will spawn an enemy if they take too much damage. There are also plenty of new weapons and enemies to keep things fresh. The story is a little perfunctory, but the sense of fast-paced action is classic Gears.
Like coming home
If you're a fan of the previous games in the series, Gears of War 4 gives you more of the classic action you want with enough new twists to keep it interesting. If you've never played before, the simple mechanics and new protagonist make this a good jumping-on point.
